How Geisha Garcia Launched a Business during Covid

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Geisha Garcia has over 10 years of professional experience managing the social media of large brands in Miami, Florida. During the global pandemic, she was temporarily furloughed from her job. However, instead of waiting for things to go back to normal, she started an Instagram account to find her first clients. When she first started, she had no business plan or strategy.

In the past 10 months, she has invested in her business GG Communications and begun working with female entrepreneurs from all over the world, managing their social media accounts and developing strategies.

1- Can you tell our readers about your background?

I was born in Cuba and raised in Miami. I have a graphic design background and have been in the communications field for over 15 years with a focus on social media for the past 10 years.

I’m currently the head of social media for a large brand, as well as the founder of GG Communications- a creative and social media agency servicing luxury female-owned brands.

2- What inspired you to start your business?

I launched my business in June 2020 while being temporarily furloughed from my full-time position due to COVID.

Fast forward 10 months and I’m grateful that the negative inspired me to tap into my entrepreneurial side because working with fellow female entrepreneurs has been one of the most rewarding professional experiences I have ever had.

3- Where is your business based?

My business is based out of Miami, but as an online service provider, I’m lucky to work with female entrepreneurs from all over the world.

4- How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

I did not go about it the way I would recommend anyone to do it. I just launched an Instagram page and began sharing my expertise through my content. That led to getting contacted by my first client and eventually more. However, I did not have a business plan in place and I’ve had to adjust my services and pricing as my client roster expanded.

5- What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?

Instagram has been my primary source of awareness as I fully rely on the app to market my business. Moving forward I plan to incorporate Pinterest and improved website SEO into my marketing strategy.

“When it is financially attainable, invest in expert consulting, coaching, systems, and outsourcing because those are the things that really move a business forward.”

6- What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

My biggest challenge has been figuring out my ideal client and the perfect offer suite. I invested in a social media coaching program to address my offers and figuring out my ideal client has been a working process mostly dependent on my experiences working with various clients and industries.

7- What personal sacrifices have you made throughout your career?

I’ve had to give up a lot of personal time and financial resources to invest in my business.

8- How do you stay focused?

I don’t struggle with staying focused on my long-term business goal. I do struggle with daily focus because there is so much that goes into running a business that it can become overwhelming. I use Google calendar to keep me completely organized and on track.

9- How do you differentiate your business from the competition?

My social media agency is focused on strategy and aesthetics. As a former graphic designer, I place a high value on a brand’s visual identity and ensure that my client’s brands are brought to life with premium graphics and/or photography.

I also pride myself in providing an exceptional client experience and my ideal client is someone who shares the same passion for excellence and seeks a superior social media presence.

10- What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?

Delivering valuable and consistent content on Instagram has been the foundation of my marketing strategy.

However, with the app’s landscape constantly changing, forging strong relationships and expanding my network is a must to continue growing my business.

11- What’s your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

My advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is to invest in themselves and their businesses. If it’s not financially possible, then invest time to learn as much as possible.

However, if and when it is financially attainable, invest in expert consulting, coaching, systems, and outsourcing because those are the things that really move a business forward.

12- What’s the best work-related advice you’ve ever received?

Delegate, automate, and outsource.

13- How do you manage self-doubt?

By making Imposter Syndrome work for me. If my inner fear is creeping up at a certain time or instance, I use that as a signal that this is an area I can likely improve.

14- What’s your favourite app, blog, and book? Why?

My favourite podcasts are The Mindset Mentor, CEO School, Hello Seven, The Thrive Society, and Dream Smarter. I listen to an episode each morning to start my day on a positive and productive note.

15- What’s your favourite business tool or resource? Why?

My favourite app is Trello because it’s free and it has so many uses. I use it to onboard my clients, manage their content, manage other projects, etc. The possibilities are endless.

16- Could you name a woman who’s inspired you the most?

There are so many women in the online space that are doing amazing things. Some I look to for inspiration and knowledge are Pia Beck (Instagram @curatewellco) and Hannah Nieves (Instagram @hannahmnieves).

17- How do you balance work and life?

I’m not the best at it or haven’t been in the past 10 months. Launching a business is no easy feat and I would be lying if I said that I don’t work on weekends and evenings. But the beauty of it is that it doesn’t feel like a task. Most times I look forward to it because I know it’s getting me close to my goal.

18- How do you unplug from work?

I work out for 1-2 hours 4 times per week. This is a non-negotiable on my calendar and I take it as seriously as any other appointment.

19- What do you have planned for the next six months?

I’m so excited for the next six months. I enrolled in a coaching program by someone in the industry I look up to and I also have plans to develop my first evergreen passive income project.
